People who feel ‘weird’ all the time often wonder whether they are suffering from depersonalisation or derealisation.
How can you recognise this?
At the heart of depersonalisation or derealisation are feelings of alienation or unreality. This means that people have the feeling that either they perceive themselves, their own body, their own self as alien, distant or unreal, or that their environment and other people seem alien, distant or unreal.
Do you always have the feeling that you are not real yourself?
Does it seem to you that things are not really happening?
Do you have the feeling that the world and everything out there is just a big theatre play?
Everything like in a film?
Or like in a dream?
Do you have the feeling that you are acting like a robot, that everything is somehow automated?
If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, then it is very likely that you are suffering from depersonalisation (feeling alienated or unreal in relation to yourself) or derealisation (feeling alienated or unreal in relation to the environment and other people).
Check:
Do the feelings of alienation or the experience of unreality persist over a longer period of time?
Have they even persisted since a certain point in time?
Do feelings of alienation or unreality keep coming back?
Does this interfere with your life?
How disturbing do you find this experience?
If feelings of unreality and alienation are persistent or recurring, it is a good idea to do something about them.
Don’t get stuck in these states, there are good ways to do something about them.
