Normality of feelings of alienation and the experience of unreality

This is completely normal!

Many people experience feeling ‘strange’ time and again. They feel detached from the world, have the feeling that they are somehow beside themselves. They have the feeling that their body is unreal, not really there. Or the world around them seems distant and alien.

Such feelings are widespread. Around 80% of all people experience this from time to time in their lives.

Factors or situations that can trigger feelings of unreality or alienation:

Many factors or situations can contribute to feeling this way from time to time.

These include substances that affect the body such as alcohol, drugs or certain medications.

Trance-like states such as meditation or repetitive movements, monotonous activities.

Physical or psychological stress states such as sleep deprivation, noise, bright artificial light, unfamiliar surroundings, sensory overload, periods of intense stress, life-threatening situations, loneliness.

Situations that evoke strong emotions such as life-threatening situations.

Or physical conditions such as hormonal fluctuations, in the course of experiencing an aura before a migraine or epileptic seizure.

In most cases, feelings of unreality and alienation subside as soon as the person has left the situation or some time has passed.

Calm yourself down!

Whenever you experience feelings of alienation or unreality, stay calm. Talk to yourself and realise that such feelings are widespread and can occur very easily. They are part of the normal defence mechanism that we all have. Our body protects us from something that is too much. Too much uniformity, too much stress, too much emotionality …

Distract yourself, go out into nature, visit friends.

In the vast majority of cases, feelings of alienation or unreality will soon pass.
